About Rumson

The seaside community of Rumson in Monmouth County is situated on a scenic 5.2 square mile peninsula bordered by the Navesink and Shrewsbury Rivers, bordering the Atlantic Ocean.  A land purchase from the Lenni-Lenape Indians was made in 1665, when the tribe called their settlement Navarumsunk.  That name was eventually shortened to Rumson, and it was incorporated nearly 250 years later in 1907.

Throughout its seafaring history, Rumson has alternately been called Black Point, Oceanic and Port Washington.  Today, the town is mainly residential in nature and has a population of about 7,100 residents.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Rumson became a desirable vacation destination for wealthy New Yorkers who were drawn to the town’s ocean breezes and bucolic seascapes each summer.  During that time period, many of these visitors built elaborate riverfront mansions on Rumson Road.  That part of town is characterized by spacious homes with equally spacious boats docked in the river.  Crossing over the bridge on Rumson Road leads to the sandy beaches in Sea Bright for swimming, fishing or boating.
